Interwiki linksEdit

Hi Hima, have you found out how to link to other languages. (on the left side of the page). Can't create a link on the danish page to english, german etc.

Tried to make the links the same way as on the Starwars wikia, but it didn't help.

thanks in advance

Joe

I have send a mail to Jason (staff) and asked for help on getting interlanguage support on the Freeciv Wikia.

joe 19:57, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

<GHe|BUSY> The thing is that interlanguage links have to be enabled first
<GHe|BUSY> otherwise, they won't work
<GHe|BUSY> and by adding them before they're enabled, it creates a server-sided cached problem that's hard to clear
<Joedalton> so i have to remove all of them first ?
<GHe|BUSY> so even if they do get enabled, the cache has to be fixed before they work
<GHe|BUSY> well, removing them now won't do much good
<GHe|BUSY> you can remove them for now if you want

nice with those links working now. I'll put them on the danish pages and some of the other languages as i stumble over them.

Missing pages and more Edit

Hello Daniel,

in the german section, Angela (staff) has moved the pages to the respektive names without De: Prefix. Now, 12 pages seem to be lost:

Is there a way to restore them from the old wiki? I cannot access it.

Also, I'm trying to copy the images from freeciv to de.freeciv, be means of a script (not ready).

now done--Chrisk 12:47, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
I saw the Chrisbot in action. Very nice. :) --Hima 13:55, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

And, maybe, remove the De: prefix in links. --Chrisk 17:09, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

I sent a mail to Paul Z about it, but he hasn't replied yet. We would be nice if we could access the old wiki at <oldwiki.freeciv.org> or something like that. Are you 100% sure that all these pages existed, i.e. that they weren't just broken links? --Hima 23:49, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
Yes I'm pretty sure that most of these pages were real. I just informed Angela about this. --Chrisk 12:47, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
Pages seem to be missing from the French wiki too. For example Fr:Unités and Fr:Bâtiments. --Hima 14:35, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
The Danish wiki also has a lot of non danish pages. They are all templates [1]. I have deleted the first one of them; a spanish, which was ok on the spanish wiki. The page was on both the wiki's. I have also found 1 page with a different content, but the rest seems to be okay. joe 10:10, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
Solved, see Forum:Lost_pages_in_localized_wikis. --Chrisk 09:53, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
French pages have been salvaged too. --Hima 11:51, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

New "Detailed" Edit

Hi Hima, I've not done a good job on detailed, but I do have a new version of it, though I'm not sure how to submit it. I'm not 100% certain on all the updates, but I think its mostly the way I want it for now. Thanks for updating the Cherokee nation, btw. --BlackJar72 03:05, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

You can always upload stuff to ftp://upload.freeciv.org/freeciv/incoming though you'll probably need a functional ftp client. Now I saw that you put up the new version on your own webspace, so you can alter the Extras download page youself with a link to the new archive. Let me know if you'd like it on ftp.freeciv.org too. --Hima 03:47, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Freeciv wiki historyEdit

Hello again. I've just spent a while going through the main page history (so as to get some accuracy into the Central Wikia link page, which you may care to check, along with its talk page). Fascinating. I thought of creating a Freeciv:History of this wiki page (much more detailed than the Timeline, which doesn't mention the move to the wiki) for other people who like to dwell on the past! Small point: I noticed some templates starting with "msg:" - I think that's no longer useful. Kind regards -- Robin Patterson 09:45, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

I put up a comment at Wikia Central's Freeciv talk page. Sound like an interesting venture. Please feel free to create such a page! You might be able get more hints about this website's past by emailing certain old maintainers and webmasters (see People) as well as the current supreme webmaster Paul Zastoupil (you can find his email at the same page). The "msg" isn't a part of any template name, but might be a deprecated MediaWiki function of some sort. Maybe we can ask Vasc about that. BTW, I answered to many of your inquiries on those category talk pages. --Hima 10:32, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Russian wikiEdit

Hi, Hima!

I have requested ru.freeciv on wikia site (see http://requests.wikia.com/wiki/Ru.freeciv). But there is no response. Can you help me?

Thank you for quick response! I have corrected title of requested wiki.

Frantony 16:56, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Hungarian translation Edit

Hi Hima! I made a some translation to Freeciv in Hungarian language. Unfortunately I have no time in the recent to continue that, but I want to do it from now. But there is a problem: I reinstalled my system, and I've forgotten to backup the ssh key to GNU. Can I create a new one or can I upload or send somewhere if I make updates on the hungarian language file? Regards, --Bdanee 16:27, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

You can easily register a new ssh key with gna.org. Just do exactly like you did the first time. There are instructions here on the wiki in the translation section and at gna.org. If you need to get an update to the translation committed quickly, upload it to ftp or similar and tell me or another admin. Best, Hima 00:25, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

jcreus/joancreus Edit

Same name, two persons: father and son.

Found that ca.freeciv was actually a wholly different wiki, and I couldn't use Freeciv's templates from there, had to duplicate everything, and thought it would be easier to remain in the general wiki and share the look & feel. So, I contacted the wikia admins and asked them to delete it.

BTW, jcreus is the father (and main contributor); joancreus is the son.

OK, we will change the current pages to Ca:whatever. Thanks for your help.--Jcreus 09:22, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Tested this move thing. This is powerful stuff! --Jcreus 10:05, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Hima! I have been looking into bots, as you said, and, with them, I now feel confident enought to retake the ca.freeciv wiki. So, I will start moving stuff from the main wiki into ca.freeciv. Thanks for the tip. Just one more thing, though: interlanguage links don't work in ca.freeciv, and I believe that the admin of the freeciv wiki should ask someone in staff to add ca.freeciv as a "sister" project. Is that right? Can you do it?

Edit

Sorry about the background. I didn't know it had bugs and glitches. I'll be glad to remake the logo with a different background. Could you link me to a better image that I could use? JoePlay (talk) 22:07, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

OK I remade it with a screenshot as the background. How's it look? JoePlay (talk) 01:07, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. I'm glad you like it. =) JoePlay (talk) 22:13, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Localizing wikis Edit

Hi, Daniel

I have written a couple pages with some guidelines and help about localizing the Wiki. Can you check them out, and see if it would be interesting to link them from the Translations page? They are written in Catanglish and would benefit from some corrections, but I think the info may be useful to other translators. The pages are:

How to create a localized wiki

Using pywikipediabot

Feel free to edit and/or rename them. Probably other people will want to add some more useful info. --Jcreus 09:32, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Training and combat Edit

My pet peeve with Freeciv documentation is the typical sentence in most units:

may become veteran through training or combat

Call me stupid, but I kept looking for a way to "train" my units after they had been built. In the end, I realized that the "training" took place in the barracks, if the unit was built in a city with them. I think it would be clearer if we modified the sentence to read:

may become veteran through training (i.e., if built in a city with barracks) or combat

Of course, for sea and air units, we should substitute "barracks" for "port installation" and "airport". You get the idea.

The change could be done quickly in all languages with the small script in my bot page.

The in-game manual shows exactly the same sentence as the wiki. Yes, I think it would be an improvement there, too (it also helps clarify the role of the various buildings) Perhaps for 2.1.1?

--Jcreus 12:55, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

New wiki Edit

I like the new design. Good job! Just two small details, though: There is a small typo (civlization instead of civilization, at the beginning), and the Talk page is protected.--Jcreus 14:32, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Main Page draft Edit

I created my own draft of the Main Page with two small changes, it is located at User:Tcrow777/Main Page test. Tcrow777 22:44, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

I changed Image:Crystal 128 penguin.png to Image:CodeCmmt002.png and changed "MAC OS X: not available yet" to "MAC OS X: source code only". Since I last posted here about this I have made some more changes, I will soon list a summery of all changes on the draft page. Tcrow777 23:32, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

I have edited my Main Page draft again, the summery of changes is now there. Tcrow777 00:54, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Teklogs adopted, less time on Client Manual Edit

I have adopted Teklogs, because of this I will not be able to spend as much time on the Client Manual, screenshots or playing Freeciv. I think something happened to the founder over there. If you have any extra time I desperately need some help over at Teklogs. This is something I have always wanted to do. Tcrow777 (Talk) 19:21, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

New template Edit

Hi Daniel! I've created a template for Wonders at Catalan Wiki. The template is here, and you can see an example here. It's in Catalan, but I can translate it. Joancreus(discussió) 19:34, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Keewl. Nice work. It doesn't look good in Opera, though. Would you mind debug it? =) --Hima 20:48, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
What? This template was based on Template:Unit.--Joancreus(discussió) 16:45, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
The Informació column is too narrow. Go grab a copy of Opera and you'll sse for yourself. --Hima 22:49, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Is it better?--Joancreus(discussió) 18:13, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Free to Play PortalEdit

I wanted to drop by and let you know about our new Free to Play Portal on the gaming homepage. The portal will give gamers a convenient way to find events, news, and information all centered around free to play games. Not to mention, the portal is a great tool for community outreach, and building awareness around your wiki. We would appreciate your involvement on the portal, feel free to post events, wiki milestones, or anything else you feel is noteworthy on the portal. It can be found here. And as always, let us know if you have any questions. JoePlay (talk) 17:51, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Table improvements Edit

Hi, Daniel.

I have found that most Catalogs in the wiki have a bug that prevents # searches from working. By now, I have only fixed the Buildings catalog.

However, I have imported from the Catalan wikipedia some improvements to tables, that allow them to be sorted (wikitables/prettytables). You can check the results at ca:Catàleg d'edificis. For that to work, though, an admin should edit Common.css and add the following code at the end (before the /* </pre> */), with one newline after the last javascript sentence.

/* wikitable/prettytable class for skinning normal tables */

table.wikitable,
table.prettytable,
table.bellataula {
  margin: 1em 1em 1em 0;
  background: #f9f9f9;
  border: 1px #aaaaaa solid;
  border-collapse: collapse;
}

table.wikitable th, table.wikitable td,
table.prettytable th, table.prettytable td,
table.bellataula th, table.bellataula td {
  border: 1px #aaaaaa solid;
  padding: 0.2em;
}

table.wikitable th,
table.bellataula th,
table.prettytable th {
  background: #9bc3d1;
  text-align: center;
}

table.wikitable caption,
table.bellataula caption,
table.prettytable caption {
  margin-left: inherit;
  margin-right: inherit;
}

Also, please check out the Catalan Techs catalog. I think the green and red boxes are easier to see than the thin lines. Can I do the same in the English version? --Joancreus(discussió) 16:00, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

I appreciate the clearer distinction accomplished with the method. OTOH somehow when the red and green fields are so much larger, they seem to me to be way too bright and eye-catching. How about experimenting with softer shades? Perhaps using grey colors for obsoletion? What do you think? --Hima 23:26, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
I have removed borders, and changed to a less flashy red (still red, though, I think it conveys the "obsolete" message better). How do you like it?

--Joancreus(discussió) 17:10, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Looks very nice. Feel free to bring it over here. :) --Hima 23:18, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
It took a while (I've been on vacation), but it's done now. If you add the code on top to MediaWiki:Common.css I could make it look exactly like the Catalan version, with sortable tables and nicer borders. Up to you. I'll take care of the search bug in the other catalogs, now. --Joancreus(discussió) 14:37, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Monaco and homepage layout Edit

Hi Hima,

I recently posted some notes regarding the Monaco skin and the homepage layout to Talk:Main Page. I'd appreciate it if you could take a look at it and let me know what you think.

Thanks! --KyleH@Wikia (talk) 17:29, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my comment. Unfortunately, for a number of reasons discussed here, Wikia will soon stop offering Monobook as a default skin choice for anonymous users. We are allowing wikis currently using Monobook some extra time to make sure that everything works properly in Monaco before flipping the switch, but I'm afraid that it's coming either way. Are there any specific aspects of Monaco that you don't like? You can customize customize Monaco pretty heavily, and I'll be happy to work with you to make it work for you. --KyleH@Wikia (talk) 16:43, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Heya! I just wanted to follow-up real quick to see if you had any questions about the possible design. As I mentioned, the change will be happening soon, so I want to make sure that everything will look alright before the switch is flipped. Thanks! --KyleH@Wikia (talk) 17:40, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
Your customized version of Monaco looks great ... I really like what you did with it! Regarding the homepage design: we highly recommend that you create a full 2-column design of some sort (I created an example at User:KyleH/dev) because it allows the right column to slide up or down depending on the size of the ad. Occasionally there might not be an ad, while on other occasions it may be as long as 600px tall (taller ads will be pretty rare, but they will occur from time-to-time). Creating a full 2-column design ensures that the page will look good regardless of anything else. If you are really set on your current design, however, you can kind of create a "phantom" right column. Take a look at what I did at User:KyleH/dev2. That kind of makes the boxes wrap around the ad, but you should know that if a longer ad is ever used on the site, it will create some extra white space between the boxes (change the height of the div in my example to 600px to see what would happen). What do you think? --KyleH@Wikia (talk) 23:46, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Cool. I went ahead and added the "fake" 2-column layout to the homepage, but as I mentioned, the advertisement dimensions may change, so you should start thinking about a true 2-column layout for the homepage. While the longer 600px ads are rare, it is only a matter of time before one appears, and we don't want the homepage to look ugly if it doesn't have to. Let me know if you need any help designing a 2-column homepage. --KyleH@Wikia (talk) 16:24, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
Yes, the homepage should be displaying 2 ads. Also, there was a small problem with the way that the page was displaying in Internet Explorer so I added a break at the end of the 2 columns as well. --KyleH@Wikia (talk) 22:35, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

/* wikitable/prettytable class for skinning normal tables */

table.wikitable,
table.prettytable,
table.bellataula {
  margin: 1em 1em 1em 0;
  background: #f9f9f9;
  border: 1px #aaaaaa solid;
  border-collapse: collapse;
}

table.wikitable th, table.wikitable td,
table.prettytable th, table.prettytable td,
table.bellataula th, table.bellataula td {
  border: 1px #aaaaaa solid;
  padding: 0.2em;
}

table.wikitable th,
table.bellataula th,
table.prettytable th {
  background: #9bc3d1;
  text-align: center;
}

table.wikitable caption,
table.bellataula caption,
table.prettytable caption {
  margin-left: inherit;
  margin-right: inherit;
}

Thanks for noticeEdit

Hi, Hima,

Do you mean that I'm supposed to place my proposes on my userpage? Can you give me a tutorial or something, or a link to a page that has instructions?

Thanks, TimeMaster Talk Main Contribs 13:43, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

I added a reply to your talk page. --hima 01:37, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Save files Edit

Hello Hima, I have searched everywhere, but could not find where and in what format the savegame files are stored. Having searched through the manual and here on this wiki, I'm still unable to find them. Could you please tell me the direction where I should search? (I've found your name in the list of featured editors)

thanks, Val --83.223.112.142 00:22, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

That would be the map format article.

Alternate MetaserverEdit

I published book's metaserver as alternate server in http://freeciv.wikia.com/wiki/Category:NEWS. If its the wrong place to publish that ... I'm sorry (new to wiki).. May I selected the wrong category, may its possible to publish the message on the top page during the metaserver outage. Thdr 16:15, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

... modified moved to http://freeciv.wikia.com/wiki/Freeciv_Metaserver and set metaserver to http://www.cazfi.net/freeciv/metaserver/index.php

it whould be nice if you could drop this message on top page for the newby users Thdr 20:42, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip. I've added a news item with credits to you. :) --hima 12:23, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Donor ListEdit

[[4]] Donor list 'We currently have $643.03 on hand'

Who is we ? When was currently ? If there is money availiable now ?

Then may we could ask paul to get the freeciv.org domain again to action or give it away to somebody who likes to maintain it. The current state of the freeciv.org domain is 'CLIENT TRANSFER PROHIBITED'. I won't donor money to somebody who I don't know, we could be anybody.

We should try to collect some money to get the 'freeciv.org' domain again onto action.

Thdr 22:29, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the input, Thdr. I've passed this on to our maintainers' list. --hima 00:05, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

where to suggest user interface/look and feel issues? Edit

Hi, I started playing civ again, this time with freeciv, after a long time. First I played the DOS version of Civ, later the CivIII from firaxis.

Now while playing freeciv, I have found some places, where I had expected to find certain functions, mostly to get information about buildings and units.

Where do I have to post this kind of suggestions so that the right people get it? I also have several suggestions for the game manual...

Let me know where to post this stuff, thanks.

Cholertinu 08:05, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

I've replied on your talk page. --hima 10:25, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Hello ^.^ Edit

Hey, I got a question... Well a couple of questions to be exact,

1. How do you make maps? I mean seriously, I wanna make my own! n.n 2. How you get to select a spot on the map when you begin a scenario game? T_T

Thanks ^_^

Lady Seren 16:13, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi Lady Seren. We are working on a built-in map and scenario editor in upcoming Freeciv 2.2. If you're adventurous (and technically skilled) you can grab the development source code and try it out today! --hima 08:08, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Attack strength rules in 2.1.9 Edit

Hi Hima,

Comparing the 2.1.9 source code with the Combat information on the wiki, there are some differences.

Attacking with 1/3 or 2/3 of a movement point remaining no longer reduces the attack strength.

Attacking with m/n hit points remaining doesn't seem to reduce attack strength either (has this ever been true?). Of course, the chance of winning the battle goes down due to the reduced hit points, but the chance of winning each round is still the same.

I have edited the entry for Alpine Troops where there was a warning about reduced attack strength with a partial movement point remaining, but there are other mentions too, not least the main Combat Mechanics section. There may be others.

Note that in later versions of FreeCiv, a new ruleset variable was introduced to allow the old behaviour, but the default ruleset still allows full attack strength with a partial movement point.

Paul Stephenson 10:15, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Paul.
Thank you for the correction. Yes, I believe the rule with reduced attack strength was disabled in the default rules because it wasn't intuitive. hima 22:28, November 28, 2009 (UTC)

FreeCiv Wiki Wacko Edit

Hi Daniel:

Upon making recent edits to the Unofficial Packages page, I noticed that many of the URLs are messed up: the mouse-over URLs are doubled for the "README" and "Download File" columns, i.e.: 'http://arklinux.osuosl.org/dockyard-devel/i586/http://arklinux.osuosl.org/dockyard-devel/i586/'. All entries seem to be affected. Possibly caused by a prior (fumbled) edit? But I see other goofiness on the site: took me several attempts to open this Talk Page for an entry.

Please investigate.

Thanks, VJS

Hi VJS,
I believe this problem has been resolved now. Thanks for the report. hima 22:29, November 28, 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up, RP. As of Freeciv 2.2 I believe we compress sav files with bz2 by default, so support for uploading sav.bz2 would also be useful.
I just gave it a test and could only confirm that sav, gz, and bz2 are still forbidden file types. I really hope these could all be supported by Wikia one day. hima 22:39, November 28, 2009 (UTC)

Explanation for birthdate require is unsatisfactory Edit

I made an edit to one of the pages and received a message asking me to create an account. However, when I went to create an account, one of the required pieces of information was my birthday. I'm not prepared to provide this personal information in order to add comments to a wiki. The explanation for why this is required is rather vague. Since I've been able to comment on other wikis, make bug reports, etc without providing this information, I'd like to know what laws in particular you are talking about when you suggest that this is mandatory.

Hi kudra,
This wiki is hosted by Wikia so they're the ones deciding on policies regarding account creation. I suggest you go to wikia.com and report this directly to them. hima 22:41, November 28, 2009 (UTC)
