- Start randomly in areas explored by no player
- Start with a Size 1 city and 3 Warriors
- Barbarian cities have no areas of influence
- Will build only combat units or coinage
- Cities will not change size
- Cities destroyed when conquered
- Cities will build units until they cannot support more
- On looting, steal gold and a tech
- If city is size 1 when looted, it turns into a barbarian city
- When you destroy the last barbarian city you seize all the tech and gold they have
- Are handled as separate factions
- Will take anything in diplomacy
- Will only give Ceasefire and Peace in diplomacy
- Different starting point barbarians are different clans
- Barbarian clans remain in Ceasefire towards each other
- Start when a player builds a Privateer or a Mercenary Ship
- All additional Privateers and Mercenary Ships the player builds join the same faction
- Start with all the technology the player has
- Pirate cities have no areas of influence
- Will build only combat units or coinage
- Cities will not change size
- Cities will build units until they cannot support more
- On conquering, steal gold and a tech
- Pirates conquer, not loot
- Cities remain intact when pirates have them
- Technology cannot be stolen from Pirates
- Are handled as separate factions
- Will take anything in diplomacy
- Will only give Ceasefire and Peace in diplomacy
- Will give all tech and cities to the player who founded them for free
- Always Worshipful towards the player who founded them
- Considered to have Alliance and Shared vision with the player who founded them
- Will remain in existence even after the player who founded them loses
- Pirate factions are considered At War and Genocidal towards each other at all times
- Pirates cannot be traced back to the player that founded them
