Forum:Wiki background image

The background image currently in use is adapted from aneglus' Freeciv GTK theme. It is quite nice IMO, but arguably somewhat intense. I just looked at the Arabic Wikipedia and they have a really nice bg with a unique pattern and mild colors. Perhaps something we could borrow or adopt?! :) Hima 13:03, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

You're right about the bg. Maybe its better if the colors were lighter? I noticed a problem with the wiki usage. The screen drawing is slow. I have a rather old 2 GHz machine here, and scrolling in the browser is deferred. Maybe the semi-transparent CSS mode is the reason? --Chrisk 09:29, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
I have an even older 1 GHz machine here, and am not experiencing any lag. Graphics card? Anyway, its possible to change to a less demanding skin on low-spec systems. --Hima 14:08, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
I've removed the semi-transparent stuff from Monobook.css, and scrolling is much smoother for me now (compare de:Hauptseite and Main Page). I guess the reason is a suboptimal graphics driver for Linux, also guessing I'm not the only one who might encounter those problems.--Chrisk 21:26, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
I noticed another serious issue with the semi-tranparent backgrounds in IE6/WinXP: About half of the links on every page cannot be clicked (but can be navigated with tab+enter). I'll revert the css tweaks here too until these issues can be resolved. --Hima 00:16, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
I changed the CSS to use a lighter background instead of the semi-transparent pixel. Is the scrolling better now? --cproc 03:14, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
Yes. --Chrisk 11:37, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm using es.freeciv as a testbed for another look: Background from ar.wikipedia and a marble pattern for other objects. --Hima 03:38, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
