Freeciv

Just installed 2.3.2 (first time install) on Ubuntu 11.4, no issues with config, make, or make install that I could see. Launched FreeCiv server OK, server responds to commands. Then launched sdl client from the freeciv/freeciv2.3.2/client/freeciv-sdl, which brought up initial splash screen with menu giving options >Start New Game, >Load Game, >Join game, >Join Pubserver, >Join LAN server, >Options, >Quit.

But only the "Start New Game" option will bold on mouseover, all other menu options will not work. Selecting "Start New Game" results in second splash screen with bottom buttons "Back", "Load Game", "Pick Nation", and "Start". All buttons inactive, game totally hung at this point.

Also tried issuing "start" command from server after initial client load, but received message "Not enough human players; game will not start".

Ideas, anyone?

OK -- I've tried running the client from the command line using the -d 3 option, and sometimes it has launched the game, but mostly it doesn't (same symptoms as above). Weird. Huge amounts of output, and I have no idea what I'm looking for.

Self compiled (from our (upstream) sources, not Ubuntu's modified ones)? Then it would be subject to GNA#18243 Try setting environment variable GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 as a workaround. --Cazfi 07:18, May 7, 2012 (UTC)

I need more coffee. You were clearly talking about sdl-client, and I suspect gtk-client specific problems... Anyway, "Not enough human players" means that you have less human players connected than server setting minplayers requires. Default should be "1" though, so just your own client connected, and not being an observer but player, should be sufficient. Try "> list" to see if you have player selected. --Cazfi 07:27, May 7, 2012 (UTC)
