Forum:Freeciv not responding, please help
From Freeciv
I am running Vista. When I start the game a box pops up saying the game wants to establish an internet connection. The first time I said "yes, one time only" and the game worked fine. But the second time I tried to play I said "Do not connect", because I was only playing single player. Now the game freezes up every time I start it, and I no longer get asked to allow an internet connection. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling already.
Does freeciv need an internet connection to work? How do I change the settings to allow an internet connection on startup (if I need one for the game to work)?
Thanks
<Possible Solution> Howdy, I haven't been seeing what you describe on Vista, but after thinking about your description I wonder whether running FreeCIV requires Admin permissions (I've turned off Vista's UAC because of other work I do on this machine). An alternative to disabling UAC is right-clicking the program's executable file, then modifying the properties to run with Admin permissions.

- Well, the answer is that Freeciv uses a (local) client-server connection even when playing in single-player mode, so it's no wonder it freezes. What you can do is limit connections to localhost (your own machine) if you never want to allow connections to your server from other computers. Rp 10:22, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
Regarding limiting network connections, I considered that when responding with the "Possible Solution" but disregarded when the OP said he uninstalled and re-installed (perhaps the app isn't uninstalled completely and game settings are retained?). If it's a networking issue, then unless the FreeCIV server has its own connection limitation config, I was also considering that a Windows Firewall rule might need to be created for the FreeCIV application. But returning to the OP's original description I'm also a bit mystified that I've never been prompted for a network connection when running server and client on the same machine like the OP (by clicking "Start New Game" button and not "Connect to Network Game").
It was a firewall issue. My new computer came with McAfee pre-installed and after I set an exception in the firewall for freeciv, it works fine. Thanks
